RIGMAJIG ALLOWS CHILDREN TO FOLLOW THEIR CURIOSITY THROUGH PLAY.

Rigamajig is a building kit conceived for hands-on free play and learning. It's a collection of wooden planks, wheels, pulleys, nuts, bolts and rope designed to engage the inquisitive mind and creative spirit of children.  Through play, they think three dimensionally, create physically, and work collaboratively.  Building with this simple set of parts helps children combine imagination with cognitive thinking & invention,  embrace process over outcome,  and empowers them to be makers of their own world.

Conceived and designed as a custom play feature for the High Line Park in New York City, the Rigamajig was developed by Cas Holman and Friends of the High Line in collaboration with Early Learning Educators, Woodworkers and Children. It was launched in 2011 as the High Line Children’s Workyard Kit and reflects the High Line’s industrial history, simple, honest materiality, and the organization’s dedication to creating meaningful play opportunities for children and families. Since its debut, the Rigamajig Basic Builder Kit has found its way into numerous schools, playgrounds, children’s museums, and backyards. The award-winning design is evolving and expanding as we learn from our pilot schools and playful friends. Rigamajig is an ideal solution for all communities because it provides easily accessible, cognitively challenging play opportunities for children of any age in any environment.

Made in the U.S.A.
Quality and local manufacturing is central to our products. The Rigamajig Basic Builder Kit and Simple Machines Add-on Kit have been fabricated using the highest grade Baltic Birch Plywood and finished by hand in Rhode Island. The rope is woven and the canvas buckets sewn in Rhode Island as well. Wingbolts and Hexnuts are made in New York State from 100% recycled nylon. The brackets are made in Pennsylvania.

What is the difference between Rigamajig and Rigamajig Jr?

Rigamajig is much larger, and has many more parts to share. It’s intended for 2-20 kids to play together in a supervised environment. Teachers across the US have been developing lesson plans that use Rigamajig to learn simple machines, mathematics, STEAM topics, and much much more. Best yet, the students design ways to use it in the classroom and all around the school.
See some examples HERE.

Rigamajig Jr. is great for 1-4 kids to play with. It requires less open space, and stores away in it’s own gym-bag sized duffel.

Where are the instructions?

Rigamajig has no right or wrong answers. The pieces are intuitive and fun to figure out. See PLAY TO LEARN if you would like some inspiration to get you started.

Care and Safety

How To Care for Your Rigamajig

With a little attention, your Rigamajig will last generations. This can be a fun activity to do with children, and they'll learn about wood as well as caring for their tools and toys. To refinish the wooden elements, lightly sand the surface and refinish using a trusted brand of child safe varnish. Follow the finish manufacturer’s instructions for best results. We recommend periodic inspections to insure planks remain smooth enough for tender hands. If the planks suffer dings and dents, simply sand lightly with 300 grit sandpaper to prevent splintering. Wingbolts and Nuts are made of an extremely durable recycled nylon. They can be washed with soap and water or in a washing machine.

Safety

Children should be supervised at all times while playing with or around the Rigamajig Basic Builder. Rigamajig contraptions should never be climbed on, stood upon, or ridden. We believe that large solid wood parts are an empowering way for children to explore constructive and imaginative play. Encourage children to be aware of their surroundings and play cooperatively. Children and their adult helpers should be cautious during the “dis-assembly” of Rigamajig contraptions. Have children work together when taking things apart, and be aware of cause and effect when removing and loosening parts. Hint: When taking apart a contraption, start at the top!
